FAQ

Why hire a contract Technical Writer?

For special projects or overflow work, hiring a contract technical writer or other professional makes good business sense.

  • With a contract professional you know up front the time and costs involved in completing the project.
  • Expenses normally incurred with a full-time permanent employee such as benefits, taxes, office space, equipment and training are nonexistent
  • What's more, a contract professional can bring valuable expertise and a fresh perspective to your project.

How much does it cost?

  • An hourly rate is used to determine a fixed project cost before we start. To obtain our current rate, send us an email.
  • Revisions that do not fundamentally change the project are provided at no charge for 30 days after you receive the first draft.
  • Once we've finished the project, we give you the first draft. You provide us with your changes (within 30 days) and we submit a final copy. You get the invoice and the process ends.

What do you need from us to get started?

  • Tell us about the project you have in mind. What type of document are you looking for-user guide, training guide, installation manual, or other document?
  • When do you want us to start the project, and when you would like it completed.
  • How do you want it delivered - printed hardcopy, PDF, online help?

Where does the technical writing take place?

We work offsite and use our own facilities and IT resources. This has the following benefits:

  • Eliminates travelling costs (and keeps what we charge to an absolute minimum).
  • We are able to work in a familiar and undisturbed environment helping us to produce high quality publications in the shortest possible time.
  • You do not need to provide office space, equipment or IT resources.

Can I update the completed documentation and Help myself?

We supply you with the source files that were used to produce the PDF documentation and Help system. You can either update this yourself, or you can get us to do it for you. Updates are charged at the standard hourly rate.

We are based in [INSERT PROVINCE/COUNTRY]. Can we still work together?

Yes. We have produced documentation for clients in Halifax and Montreal and even outside of Canada, as far away as Texas. All we need is a working copy of your software and any existing documentation (use cases, specifications, etc.) to get started. Together, we can arrange telephone and internet meetings to interview the necessary subject-matter experts. Files can be passed back and forth using our internet dropbox account.
